BKV Group was commissioned by Spotsylvania County to provide master plan, programming, design, construction documents and construction administration services for the addition and renovations to the existing Company 6 fire station located at 5700 General Semmes Road. This station currently has the largest call volume of current Spotsylvania fire stations. The current station includes a medic unit, engine unit and ladder unit totaling eleven staff wedged into three small bedrooms.

The proposed addition and renovation will provide for a future staffing goal of (14) fourteen. The plan concept integrated fourteen individual bunkrooms, four individual changing rooms, a new day room, dining room kitchen suite, a locker area for 42 personal lockers, a laundry room, administrative offices and public lobby and toilet room. An addition on the east side of the building provides for operational spaces including a separate PPE gear storage room, decontamination room and a new main electrical room. Re-purposed space will provide a new shop area and SCBA equipment room. The proposed addition adds 4,000 SF of building to the existing facility. The proposed expansion will require phasing as the building shall remain operational during construction.

Based upon our performance for company 6, the county recently selected BKV Group to develop the prototype facility plan for two new fire stations to serve the county. Fire station 3 & 12 are currently in the programming and site concept phase. The programming/prototype development is focusing on the current site for station 3. The proposed site has severe limitations to include lack of public water, single-phase power, wetlands and no public sewer.

BKV Group will be assisting the county in identifying site candidates for the Company 12 fire station. We anticipate the site for Company 3 will be far more restrictive than 12, however, developing a prototype that can be easily site adapted on to various sites with unknown constraints will be a major challenge for our whole team; a challenge that BKV Group is well experienced and equipped to meet.
